'Beginner's Greek': Guy gets girl, then loses phone number...

Somebody call Amy Adams. The "Enchanted" princess would be perfect as Holly, the lovely strawberry blonde at the heart of James Collins's first novel Beginner's Greek. Readers will find themselves naturally playing casting director while reading this good-hearted comedy of manners, because the novel (knowingly) plays off so many romantic-comedy conventions that Meg Ryan could ask for a cut of the royalties.

Under Peter Russell's Wall Street suit beats the heart of a wistful romantic. He's always dreamed of love at first sight, and when Holly plunks down in the seat next to him on a New York-L.A. flight with her copy of "The Magic Mountain" by Thomas Mann (which just happens to be the only German novel Peter's ever read), he can't believe his good fortune.

Five life-changing hours later, Holly gives her phone number to Peter.

Many obstacles face Cards at USF

TAMPA — The defense, already thin, lost two of its best and most experienced players this week. The offense has become predictable and one-dimensional. One of the nation's top defensive players awaits. The opponent is high-quality and the site has been particularly unfriendly. Other than that, everything looks great for the University of Louisville football team (5-6, 2-3) as it takes on South Florida (7-3, 2-3) Saturday night in its bid to pull an upset and enhance its prospects for a 10th straight bowl berth. Kickoff is at 8 p.m. (ESPNU) in Raymond James Stadium, home of the Tampa Bay Bucs of the NFL.

UofL is coming off its best all-around performance of the season, rallying from a 31-14 deficit to tie the score, then losing at West Virginia 38-31 on Nov. 9.

But since then, the Cards — who traveled with only 25 healthy defensive players — have lost two more starters.

Political Insider

Dobson listed McCain's many sins, including support for embryonic stem cell research, opposition to a gay marriage ban for the U.S. Constitution, and the use of "foul and obscene" language.

But Dobson didn't say who evangelical voters should vote for, leaving many to guess. And on Tuesday, in many cases, like chose like.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

While Hillary Clinton was muscling through a big win in California on Tuesday, Cynthia McKinney was getting trounced by Ralph Nader in that state's Green Party presidential primary.

Nader took 61 percent of the vote.

Healthy looking Winehouse off to jailhouse

Off to visit her imprisoned husband, Blake Fielder-Civil, at Pentonville, it's fair to say that the recent problems facing Amy Winehouse have not all disappeared.

However, her last week in rehab, forced upon her by her father Mitch after recent images of her openly smoking crack cocaine, seems to have brought a little more colour into her cheeks.

Swapping her usual scowl for a hearty smile for the lenses, Amy was snapped leaving her new rehab home looking healthier and less skeletal than in recent weeks.

But Winehouse may be banned from the Grammys after she was questioned by police in London about crack cocaine.

The singer was interviewed under caution at a clinic in connection with video footage which allegedly showed her smoking the drug.

Chief: Officer abused power

A Corpus Christi police officer fired Friday bought a seized truck for about $10,000 less than its real value and visited one of its owners in jail to negotiate the sale, Chief Bryan Smith said in a disciplinary letter.

The officer, 22-year veteran Senior Officer Martin Jasso, was fired Friday after he was accused of abusing his authority with his involvement in vehicle sales at the city's impound lot, the letter said. A Corpus Christi Police Department captain and lieutenant also are under investigation and were put on paid administrative leave Tuesday.

Smith wouldn't comment Wednesday and has said he will make an announcement at the end of the week. He detailed allegations against Jasso in a letter sent Friday to the city's Civil Service Commission and Human Resources Department.

On a collision course with the NFL, Dave Pear is playing to win

Former NFL all-pro defensive lineman Dave Pear now must use a cane to help relieve the pain and pressure from severe spinal injuries he sustained on the gridiron. Although he is fighting the NFL's system of awarding disability benefits to former players, he proudly wears the Super Bowl ring he earned with the Oakland Raiders in 1981. Pear played college football at the University of Washington.

Microsoft's Offer For Yahoo Contributes To Higher Close On Wall Street ...

2/1/2008 4:40:39 PM Stocks closed higher on Friday, adding to gains posted in the previous session. Investors weighed in on Microsoft's (MSFT) announcement regarding its offer to acquire Yahoo (YHOO) along with several mixed economic reports.

Before the opening bell, Microsoft announced an unsolicited takeover offer to acquire for Yahoo for $44.6 billion. Microsoft expects to complete the proposed transaction in the second half of calendar year 2008, but the Justice Department said that it is interested in reviewing associated antitrust issues.

The Labor Department also released its report on the employment situation for the month of January before the stat of trading. The report showed that non-farm payrolls decreased by 17,000 jobs in January following an upwardly revised increase of 82,000 jobs in December.
