Diabetes 'next step' study open

Diabetes patients who are having trouble controlling their disease are being invited to take the "next step" in treatment through a new study at St. Louis University.

The Diabetes Next Step research will test the effectiveness of adding bedtime insulin therapy to the patients' current treatment regimen. It will compare two different types of insulin when added to the oral drugs and exenatide that Type 2 diabetes patients are already taking.

"The potential benefits to the patients are threefold," said Dr. Griffing, a professor of general internal medicine at the school.

"First, there is a potential for improved blood sugar control. Second, patients will receive close medical monitoring by research-trained staff. Third, patients will receive research study drugs at no cost along with supplies, testing and medical care."

The study is open to anyone between the ages of 18 and 75 who is taking metformin and exenatide.

Barrymore can't believe her "Hollywood beauty" tag

BEIJING, Jan. 16 -- Actress Drew Barrymore is amazed she has been declared a "Hollywood beauty" as she has struggled with acne her whole life.

The "Charlie's Angels" star said that she is always struggling with acne problem and battles to keep her skin clear.

"My only beauty recommendation is zit cream. I couldn't live without it. I get zits all the time and they annoy me more than anything else in the world. I've used every face wash, acne cream, everything," Contactmusic quoted her as saying.

The 32-year-old actress also admitted that she still lacks confidence in her appearance.

"It's so funny because people say, 'You've got such great skin', and I'm like, 'Are you kidding?'

"I guess now I'm getting older I'm getting more wrinkles to go with the pimples.

CoolTouch Inc. Responds to Cynosure Patent Infringement Lawsuit

ROSEVILLE, Calif., Jan. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- CoolTouch Inc., a pioneering manufacturer of medical lasers, states the CoolTouch CoolLipo(TM) 1320 wavelength laser was designed to be superior to the Cynosure SmartLipo 1064 technology and does not infringe. Among other reasons, the CoolLipo incorporates state-of-the-art 1320 nm laser technology, coated fibers, and a variety of handpieces which allow the fiber to be extended beyond the end of the cannula, thereby not infringing the '873 patent whose claims require that the fiber must be adjacent to the end of the cannula. The CoolTouch advantage of extending the fiber beyond the cannula helps prevent inadvertent heating of the cannula and assists in cutting connective tissue.

Additionally, thousands of pulsed Nd:Yag lasers with specifications identical to the SmartLipo have been sold since the mid-1980s.

Cells, texting give predators secret path to kids

The same cell phones that parents buy as safety devices for their children are the gadgets that pedophiles and predators use to prep kids for sexual encounters, experts and police say.

The latest case is out of Pennsylvania. Police say a 26-year-old P.E. teacher admitted to having sex with a 14-year-old student in the school's parking lot.

Detectives from the Moon Township Police Department said they found nude pictures of Beth Ann Chester on the teen's cell phone along with text messages.

Chester faces 14 charges, including three counts of sexual abuse of a child and involuntary deviate sexual intercourse. Watch police describe how Chester explained the relationship »

Robert Del Greco, Chester's attorney, declined CNN's request for a comment.

Hardware High-Def Sales Split Skewed by Free Blu-ray Disc Players

Recent NPD Group sales data would suggest that the Warner Bros. Blu-ray Disc announcement just before CES 2008 had an immediate and dramatic impact on the sales of high-definition movie players, but new information shows that Blu-ray Disc may not be tipping the scales as heavily as originally thought.

Last week, Digital Bits published NPD numbers showing that 93 percent of new high-definition hardware sold was for Blu-ray Disc. According to BetaNews, however, NPD is not supporting those figures, saying that they were not an official release from the firm and not a long-term indicator of the industry.

While HD DVD did suffer some lost momentum due to the loss of Warner's support, Blu-ray Disc's overwhelming command in the new hardware split was potentially due to free player deals rather than new sales.
